These projects are currently under development. Finished products will be available through Morningstar Folk Music. If you'd like to be notified when new publications become available, please add your name to our e-mail list.

  • A library of field recordings of West Virginia fiddlers, banjo players, singers and storytellers mostly made in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Several CD's have already been published with support from our donors but are currently not available (see our online store listings)

  • A book of West Virginia songs with accompanying CD featuring music, banjo tab, and words as sung by Dwight Diller has been published. It has sold out its first and second printing and is currently out of print. A second book (and a third and fourth and fifth...) is in the works with a projected availability of December 2009.

  • A video of Pocahontas County with music played by Dwight Diller. Photography will be done by former National Geographic photographer Bates LIttlehales and editing by Jody Littlehales. Projected availability in late 2008.

  • We have completed a long term project to scan and rectify the negatives of photos of the Hammons family and other notable musicians and events taken by Dwight Diller in the early 1970's. These will be used in a variety of projects in the future.

  • A book including the stories of Maggie Hammons Parker, Sherman Hammons, Ruie Hammons, Burl Hammons, Lee Hammons plus a DVD with selections from over 700 BXW 35mm photos and local footage using a camcorder plus digital camera and 35mm camera will be blended and brought into "ONE" and released to the public. This project is currently seeking funding, so tax deductible donations to YewPine Cultural Traditions would be appreciated.

  • In March 2006, YewPine Cultural Traditions organized and sponsored a benefit concert for Dwight Diller featuring traditional West Virginia musicians to help Dwight out as he was recovering from a serious accident in October 2005.

  • A book and DVD featuring the stories of Maggie Hammons along with Dwight's photos is in the works. This is a project that's currently looking for funding, so if you have ideas or would like to contribute, please contact us.

  • A CD featuring Dwight Diller's fiddle playing with banjo and fiddle accompaniment by Darin Gentry, Dr. Brad Parks, and Gail Hatton that includes many of the tunes he learned from the Hammons' and other Pocahontas County musicians has now been completed and is available at Morningstar Folk Music .

  • An accapella ballad recording featuring mostly Gail Hatton's tremendous mountain voice has been recorded and is currently in production. Gail is originally from Kentucky and has never lost that influence. about 3 or 4 of Dwight's songs will be included also.

  • Dwight is starting to get cooking again on the huge project that he started 40 years ago when he started recording
and then photographing his neighbors, the Hammons' folks. The Hammons are very well known in most all sectors of "old time traditional Appalachian mountain music" because the Library of Congress used just a tiny part of what Dwight has available and released it under their crown.

This project will prove to be the most worthwhile project for the preservation of a certain specific part of the old time West Virginia mountain culture, heritage, music that has passed and gone, never to return. Anyone with a vision to help, the main place, as usual, is with some funds. YPCT has furnished some needed equipment. when the time comes probably a handful of computer programs will be needed. But ultimately, as far as Dwight knows, there is not now nor has there been anything with this kind of scope coming from grass roots and almost no money to work with over the decades.

If you have a project in mind that you think might fit into our mission we'd love to hear about it. As projects materialize and we find individuals or organizations interested in helping them to become reality we may be in a position to make grants, but we already have many enthusiastic and skillful volunteers who may be interested in using their skills to help you preserve a piece of culture that you are passionate about. And if you work for a company that matches employee donations to 501(c)(3) corporations, please consider making a donation to YPCT and letting your employer help with this work as well!
